It’s Hip to Chip: Why Microchipping Is Your Pet’s Best Ticket Home

Spring in Baltimore means adventure season. Walks through Federal Hill Park, patio brunches, harbor strolls, and backyard hangouts are back in full swing.

But with more open doors, busy sidewalks, and outdoor distractions comes something no pet parent wants to think about:

Lost pets.

Every year, pets slip collars, bolt through gates, or panic during loud noises and run. At Swan Harbor Pet Urgent Care, we often meet worried Good Samaritans who bring in found dogs and cats, hoping we can help reunite them with their families.

The very first thing we do?

Scan for a microchip.

A microchip is tiny, about the size of a grain of rice, but it can make a life-changing difference. It gives shelters and veterinary teams a direct path back to you when your pet can’t speak for themselves.

Why Every Baltimore Pet Should Be Chipped

  • Collars can break or fall off

  • Tags can become unreadable

  • Indoor pets can still escape

  • Storms and fireworks can trigger panic

Microchips provide permanent identification that stays with your pet for life.

Already Chipped? Read This.

A microchip only works if your contact info is current.

If you moved, changed your number, or adopted a chipped pet and never updated the registry, now is the perfect time to fix it.
