Thanksgiving Pet Safety

Thanksgiving is a time for family, food, and gratitude — but it can also bring hidden dangers for our furry family members. At Swan Harbor Animal Hospital in Baltimore, we want to help you keep your pets safe and stress-free this holiday season.

1. Watch What They Eat

While it’s tempting to share from your plate, many Thanksgiving foods can upset your pet’s stomach or even be toxic. Avoid giving your pets turkey skin, bones, onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, and anything with xylitol (a common sugar substitute). If you’d like to treat your pet, stick to plain turkey meat, pumpkin puree, or pet-safe treats.

2. Mind the Trash

Pets are experts at sniffing out leftovers! Keep trash cans secured, especially after the big meal. Turkey bones and greasy foil can cause digestive upset or choking hazards.

3. Create a Calm Space

Thanksgiving gatherings can be loud and busy. Give your pets a quiet space where they can relax away from guests, especially if you have anxious cats or dogs.

If you suspect your pet has eaten something unsafe, call Swan Harbor Animal Hospital right away. Our team is here to help Baltimore pet owners handle any holiday emergency with care and compassion.
